Growing from strength to strength, Wroughton Classic 2008 was such a success that more than 25,000 visitors and just under 3,000 classic exhibits from all over Britain (and way beyond!) joined us over the weekend.
The allocated car park was actually full (a first for the venue) by 11.45am on the Sunday with a mile and a quarter tailback to Junction 16 of the M4!
Thankfully the situation was resolved quickly and the overflow was soon accommodated on the extensive space provided by the airfield’s disused runways.
Thanks to a young petrol head called Simon Austen, assisted by his father, 2,604 classic cars and more than 300 classic bikes were counted on site on Sunday.
The addition of the Old Sodbury Sortout brought a new facet to the show and everyone agreed they would like them back next year, hopefully with their Land Rover specialists.More than 100 different manufacturers’ vehicles spanning 100 years of motor car production ensured there was something for everyone.
From a 1902 Battery car still in weekly use, to one of the last MG’s to roll off the production line only a few years ago, there was a lot to demonstrate how cars have changed.
One star of the show was the only 1935 Jensen Ford in existence plus some extremely rare and original indicators on a 1933 Austin that, at the time, prompted questions in the Houses of Parliament!
There was a huge amount of interest from the media in this year's show, both locally and nationally..
BBC Radio Swindon and Radio Wiltshire were present throughout Saturday interviewing, talking to visitors and exhibitors and broadcasting live from the show ground capturing the atmosphere of the event..
Several exhibits at the show were lucky enough to be included in Chris Serle’s exciting new television series, ‘ClassicGear’, which is going out on prime time ITV1 in November 2008. The ClassicGear team were so impressed with the range of vehicles that turned up on the Saturday that they came back again on Sunday too!
Two teams from BBC TV were also present, one was tracing the history of Ford Cars from Dagenham whilst the other was looking at how families spent their leisure time.
Several exhibitors and their cars or families visiting the show have been interviewed or selected for possible inclusion in the BBC documentaries due to be shown early next year.
The concours produced some interesting exhibits with a popular and well-deserved Car of the Show Award going to Chris Krzywiec’s 1964 Mini Cooper.
The full competition results are as follows:
The Adrian Flux Car of the Show Award
Mr Chris Krzywiec - 1964 Mini - Awarded the Autorite Concours Cup, a £250 insurance voucher from Adrian Flux Insurance and a signed copy of Peter Hingston’s new book; 'The Enthusiasts’ Guide to Buying a Classic British Sports Car'
This year's car of the show award was a £250 voucher for classic car insurance kindly donated by Adrian Flux Insurance
Awarded 1st in Concours – Mr Bill Smith – 1935 Jensen Shooting Brake
Awarded 2nd in Concours – Mr David Hyde – 1935 Austin Seven Pearl Cabriolet
Awarded 3rd in Concours – Mrs S Douglas – 1957 Austin A35
Awarded 1st in Modified Section – Mr David Hames – Triumph Dolomite
Awarded 2nd in Modified Section – Mr Phil Smith – 1980 Austin Mini Pick Up
Awarded the KVS Cup for the Best Club Stand – The Range Rover Club
An exciting series of exhibitor pedal car races were held on the Saturday evening with last year’s defending champions, ‘Geriatrics Rebourne’ regaining the Science Museum Wroughton Silent Grand Prix cup on the Sunday
.
Overall, there was no doubt that the weekend was another resounding success, mainly thanks to the exhibitors and visitors to the show most of who agreed that the relaxed, friendly, ‘festival spirit’ fast becoming a trade mark of this growing new show was indeed at the heart of its popularity.
The organisers would like to thank all who attended, both for joining us and helping to make the show such a succes and for leaving the site so clean and orderly. They would also particularly like to thank all their friends, family and volunteers for all their tireless efforts and support.
